Michael Sylvester
We have not really lost anything at all except, perhaps, the idea that we were in control, which was never really true anyway.
Almost 35 years ago, I began traveling the world, mostly to rapidly developing countries, first studying and then working, doing my small part to help promote global environmental law internationally.
My work focused on the law, policy, diplomacy and finance of how millions of people, working together accelerated change, moved beyond their fear and into new ways of treating nature and each other.
Then, in 2016, after spending more than two decades in the super cities of Asia, I stepped away, sailing over the horizon. I did so because we are separating ourselves from nature in the name of progress.
My goal was to copy Jacques Cousteau by going out to sea and sending back short form and long form documentary works. But, I have learned, social media does not connect us back to our wild, human hearts. Only by going out in nature can we do that.
Planet Earth is more than 70% water. More than half the air you breathe comes from the ocean. 3 billion people rely on it as a food source. But it is ‘out there’ and so not really part of our collective daily reality.
I want to try to change that by introducing you to the people who do focus on it every day. There are thousands of Ocean Responders already out there trying to solve our most challenging problems, so follow the journey and get to know them with me.
If you want to know more about my background and legal works or need help with a current matter, please use the links below or contact me directly. As I may be paddling up to 15 hours a day on travel days, I thank you in advance for your patience. - Michael Sylvester
